Colossians 1:19 says "For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him". Have you ever stopped to think about that? We know that at twelve years old Jesus already knew the mind of God in Heaven. It is assumed that Jesus had the power of God from birth but can you imagine a toddler today who has the power to create or destroy everything or send fire and brimstone on just two cities in a plain? He turned water into wine when he was thirty, walked on water, and made a single person's lunch fill a huge crowd with a dozen times the meal left over. Can you imagine the amount of control it took for twelve year old Jesus to deal with high school boy pranks or the slights that may have come from being a mere carpenter's son? Lord Acton said "Power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely." (And a number of other guys as stated here.) Jesus' time was full of stories of the fickle, petty, and proud gods of the Greeks and Romans who had limited power over certain parts of nature and humanity. I can just imagine teenage Jesus listening to other boys talk about Zeus' many lovers or Demeter's pain over her daughter's disappearance and scoffing at his friends for thinking that is what a god is like. Think back to your school years. Can you remember all the pranks school children or siblings played on each other. How many times did you want to hurt someone in an instant? How often do you think a human teenage boy, who can read minds and hearts, would want to hurt people? Or a teenage boy that can change peoples' hearts? How many times have you seen someone across the room and wanted them to like or love you? Jesus had that power and yet never used it. How easily could Jesus have reeked vengeance on people for thoughts or deeds and yet the only time we have recorded that he got angry was when he cleared the temple. Even then he did it without his supernatural powers. We often think about Jesus' temptation as being just those thirty days with Satan but the reality must have been so much more annoying. Even if Satan only had direct contact with Jesus for thirty days during his life, he had to deal with sinful humans every day of his life. Even his disciples could act stupid some times. According to Luke 22:24 the disciples were bickering over which of them was the greatest hours before Jesus went on trial. It was just before the longest night and most painful day of Jesus' life and they were bickering about which of THEM was the greatest! All Jesus wanted was a quiet night to enjoy fellowship and the pride of the disciples got in the way, yet all he did was rebuke him. Wow, what control and love Jesus had throughout his life!
Alas! And Did My Savior Bleed is a beautiful song to remind us that Jesus, the perfect man, died for each of us. Here it is on Youtube song by a congregation.
What do you think about Jesus' years of temptation and the power he kept so controlled?

Interesting... I hadn't thought of it like that before. I knew about the last supper and talking about who was the greatest, but hadn't connected that to Jesus, who is about to do the hardest thing, the culmination of taking on all our sins, being separated from God... the juxtaposition of those is incredible. Context- something I feel as though I need to be constantly reminded of. Thanks Lyd, for the thought provoking post.
ReplyDeleteAlso, I think you should absolutely put a link in FB when you do another blog. Helpful for me, and probably more accountability for you :) I know I need that!
ReplyDeleteI know, I just don't want to annoy the friends who don't care about my blog/s. I'm not willing to start another page just for this blog, especially with Facebook's new limits. I need to find a happy medium.
